Civic Empowerment in Cleveland

21 08 2008

This past weekend in Cleveland, Yalla Vote Ohio held a Civic Empowerment Workshop at the Beit Hanina Social Club, an endorsing organization of the Yalla Vote ‘08 campaign. The event turned out really well, thanks in great part to our numerous excellent speakers.

Find out who came and read more about the workshop…

The speakers included representatives from both presidential campaigns: Nicole Reese, Director of the Cuyahoga County Victory Center, from the McCain Campaign; and Kate Richards, a Field Organizer for the Obama Campaign. Dennis Anderson, Community Outreach Manager for the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, also spoke, as did Malak Jadallah from Congressmen Dennis Kucinich’s office; Jim Trakas (former Chairman) and Pierre Bejjani from the Republican Party of Cuyahoga County; and Nickie Antonio, from the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party’s Executive Committee.

State Represenative Jennifer Brady stopped by to talk about the Ohio House of Representatives and how to communicate effectively with your representative. In addition to that, Richard Ganim, who is the former mayor of Seven Hills as well as a founding member of the Cleveland American Middle Eastern Organization (C.A.M.E.O.), gave a few words of encouragement and explained the importance at getting involved in this election at any level.

Although many of the people who attended the event are already active in the community, it was exciting to see some new faces and hear that they were looking for ways to get involved.  All in all the event was great and I’m looking forward to our next event, which is our Issues Forum in October.

Stay tuned for more. And don’t forget to Yalla Vote!
