The sixties is always remembered for the music, but with the music accompanied the fashions that were sometimes enhanced by musicians with their constant changes of attire on stage. These were ever changing trends that brought color and energy into our lives. Many fashion designers made their name in this era, with their sometimes outrageous designs. It was these fashion designers that made London the fashion capital of the world, prompting tourists of all nationalities to come and visit Carnaby Street. At that time, it was one of the most famous streets on the planet.
Taking part in the seventies
The seventies brought about several changes to men’s fashion, particularly evident in the style of men’s suits who had developed a new image. The jacket was tailored, with emphasis on the shoulder line, and flared trousers complemented the outfit. Furthermore, it was obvious that other countries were becoming more involved in the world of fashion with America, Italy and France producing designers who were eager to contribute their ideas, although London still figured significantly. Casual off-the-peg fashions were preferred by Paris and London while Italy produced their own logo combined with a unique touch of luxury. Pop personalities had now become involved in the fashion scene. It was essential that they had to be seen to be advertising a glam rock theme to their dress and overall presentation, which was copied, by their adoring public. It seemed that anything old and military was acceptable, just as long as it was brightly colored.
The Enlightening Eighties With the eighties, the influence of France, Italy and America seemed to become more intense followed closely by Japan. London was not as dominant as it had been as the limelight of men’s fashion had reached new heights and was now international. Fashions were ever changing with trendy hairstyles such as the mullet for one, narrow ties and the introduction of sports wear. This has become increasingly popular and appears to have a well established hold on the market today
The Nineties – All Cult Trends & Fashion Designers
The nineties brought about the need for simple trends and the desire to comply with ever changing fashions diminishing. The ready made market was booming, with many of the retail outlets becoming household names. It was during this era that saw the beginning of many. Well known fashion designers challenge the men’s fragrance market, putting their names to be different eau de colognes and after shave lotions, with immediate success. This enabled the perfume industry to experience an even greater level of prosperity. Simple trends were adopted and the ready made market flourished even more with the names of many retail outlets becoming just as popular as the names of the influential fashion designers of the sixties and seventies. It was the nineties that prompted a number of famous designers to diversify taking advantage of the modern man’s desire, for after shave balm and eau de cologne. With these fashion designer names on these products, it prompted more to follow suit enhancing an already viable perfume industry.
The New Century Nuance or Was It?
It appeared that although the 21st century had arrived, an input of innovative ideas had not. Men’s fashion seemed to be lacking the new sparkle that was expected of it, just by being part of a new era. Nothing seemed to happen, so it sought and was dependent upon a revival of earlier fashion designs. Finally, this was helped with a new generation of fashion designers able to offer their own input and individuality to an exhausted niche. Men’s fashion experienced modifications to the current styles with a prominence of masculinity returning.
All-in-all the pattern of change that has occurred over the last 50 years has witnessed many fashion icons to become firmly established throughout the world, not only in men’s fashion, but influencing every aspect of our life today: at home and at work.
